30 East London date ideas to try in 2024
From cocktail bars to dinner dates, discover our picks of East London date ideas for all relationship stages.
Whether you're mustering up the motivation to get back into dating, are in a long-term relationship, or simply want to impress someone, we've got you covered with East London date ideas. From the 1st dalliance to the 50th, unearth lovely venues around Hackney to enjoy with a date.
After all, the dating scene in London is fun at best and soul-sapping at worst, so the least we can do is take 'where to go?' out of the equation.
The first date
The first date. Nerves, apathy, excitement... However you're feeling about it, simplicity wins. A pub or coffee date takes the pressure off and lets you focus on the person in front of you. Now is not the time for the restaurant-in-the-dark experience or the Alcatraz cocktail gimmick. Sure, some people have magical first dates that last 48 hours and fizz with a sort of love struck velocity. But the truth is, most first dates are average. To avoid disappointment, keep it short, sweet and cheap.
Here's our pick of coffee shops and pubs that are great first dates in the sense that you won't get heaps of people and long-in-the-tooth couples sussing you out and texting each other, "don't look now, but think those people next to us are on a date." *shudder*
☕ Hackney Coffee Company, Cambridge Heath
This stunning Hackney Road coffee shop is a long-time favourite. It feels spacious enough to have a proper conversation without the world and its wife eavesdropping. Plus, it has a lovely ambient feel about it and the coffee slaps.
☕ Gallery Cafe, Bethnal Green
Beautiful space in Bethnal Green with a large garden and that good, good lighting. Everything is vegan.
🍺 The Londesborough, Stoke Newington
Laid back Stoke Newington pub a stone’s throw away from the high-street. You can probably just keep going there as a first date base until the staff learn your name.
🍺 The Elderfield, Clapton
Classic Clapton pub with gorgeous interiors and a laid-back vibe.
🍺 The Hemingway, Victoria Park
Lovely expansive pub around the corner from Victoria Park. Nice big outdoor space for the smokers and sunbathers.
🍺 Mikkeller, Hoxton
Danish bar, Mikkeller is also a tidy first date option, it's small enough to feel cosy, but doesn't threaten awkwardness as there's enough of a chorus going on with other drinkers. Just make sure your date likes pints as although other beverages are available, that's their staple.
The 'having fun' date
For the times where you want to bring some romance to the occasion, dress up nice and treat yourself, these are our top picks.
🍷 Nobody Asked Me, Chatsworth Road
Those lamenting the closure of P Franco should definitely check out Nobody Asked Me. A petite shopfront on Chatsworth Road spirals down into a hip, intimate basement wine bar. Specialising in low intervention, indigenous wine with a rotating menu, it's a great option for a romantic date night. We loved the wine and really enjoyed the music selection, too.
🍸 Equal Parts, Hackney Road
Formerly Avoman, the new cocktail bar by the team behind Sager + Wilde has only been open a few weeks, but it feels like it's been here forever. Even on Monday evenings, the place crackles with energy. I love low lit places that remind you of eras gone by, and that's totally the atmosphere here. Curated music plays from a traditional record player and sippers perch around the bar. The staff really know their stuff, but they're chipper, not snooty. For all its style, Equal Parts doesn't feel pretentious.
🍸 Satans Whiskers, Bethnal Green
High energy bar with frosted windows and strong cocktails. This isn't the place for a quiet conversation - you won't be able to hear your partner over the music. But the convivial atmosphere makes it a safe bet for a great time.
🍸 Brilliant Corners, Dalston
Listening bar with nightly DJs and a Japanese theme. Get there early on a weekend unless you fancy a dance - the floors filled by 11pm.
🍹 Diddy’s Bar, London Fields
Diddy's pocket-sized space has many charms, from the futuristic pink basement to affordable cocktail menu (£6 Aperols, hello), it's a creative exploration in cuteness. This might be London Fields' best kept secret.
The 'nice dinner' date
Be it a special occasion, or an excuse to get out of the house. Here are some places to take a date for a nice dinner in East London.
🇵🇹 Casa Do Frango, Shoreditch
The whole 'cheeky Nandos' furore branded piri-piri chicken uncool, but Casa Do Frango is changing that. The kind of food that foodies secretly want to eat is in abundance on this menu. There's unreal Portuguese empanadas, doorstop sourdough bread with homemade butter, gigantic juicy prawns, green rice and of course, chicken.
An unexpected winner comes in the form of a whole charred cawliflower which the chef tells us has been marinated overnight in honey, lime and piri-piri, and covered in a mint yoghurt. It's 'best thing I've ever put in my big fat chops' levels of divine. Even better, are the pasteis de nata, custard clouds of joy so good you're almost tempted to load up Skyscanner and book a flight to Porto. Let's not forget spicy margaritas, so tantalising they burn my lips. Run, don't walk for a meal that will put a huge smile on your face, and your partner in crime.
🇪🇸 Sagardi, Shoreditch
One for the carnivores. Sagardi offers the most phenomenal Basque Country cuisine in the heart of Shoreditch. We felt as though we were transported to a Spanish castle with the dark stone and wood interiors, wine decanters and sublime dishes like El Txuletón rare beef steak, tuna tartate, mushroom croquettes, Padrón peppers and Basque cheesecake. Very romantic. Go hungry, and consider this for a double date option so you can try even more of the menu.
*Offer* Sagardi is kindly offering East London Newsletter subscribers 10% off the bill until September 2023. Simply show this article to redeem the discount.
🇮🇹 Alfi, Spitalfields
There is something so pleasing about simple cooking done well. Despite dining at Alfi in the middle of freezing January, the fresh flavours transported us to the sunny, salty waters of Cefalù. From the charred sea bass fillet to the plump and juicy Burrata ball atop an insane pistachio tapenade to the tomato salad bathed in high-quality olive oil, this is uncomplicated Italian dining at its best. The Catarratto natural wine paired excellently with our small plate selection, we definitely recommend trying it when you visit.
🍃 Mildreds, Dalston
What I love about Mildred's is although it's 100% plant-based, they're not pushy in the messaging. The food is absolutely exceptional, plentiful, and just so happens to be vegan. The twist on modern classics is perfectly executed. We tried the 'cumberland sausage and mash', which was so flavourful with mustard in the mash, creamed spinach, some exemplary (and crunchy) onion rings completed with a red wine jus. The sausages themselves were loaded with herbs and just the right consistency. It was such a tasty antidote to a rainy and cold January evening. We washed the dish down with orange wine and finished with a spiced sticky toffee pudding of dreams.
Mildreds delivers on the taste factor, whether your date is plant based or not.
🇮🇹 Venerdi, Clapton
Why queue hours for Padella when you can go straight to Venerdi and - let's face it - enjoy the pasta just as much? Offering an expansive menu of homemade pizza and pasta, we tried the meatball pasta and the mushroom and truffle pizza washed down with gluggable Italian wine.
The experience was like being transported to Taormina for an episode of The White Lotus series 2. Sunshine on a plate, complemented by a great space and excellent service. Oh and let's not forget about a heaven-sent tiramisu. Date night done right.
🥢🌱 Facing Heaven, London Fields
It's vegan Asian food, but you wouldn't necessarily know it. If you're looking for somewhere hip to take your date that won't break the bank, Facing Heaven is the place.
🇮🇹 Tom’s Pasta, Hackney Downs
Lasagne hasn't been cool since the 90s, but it's still one of my favourite things to eat. Luckily, Tom's Pasta refuses to serve anything else. This is not just any lasagne either, this is a bougie lasagne done 4 different ways, finished with copious amounts of parmesan. If you're reading this, please marry me Tom.
🇮🇹 Bella Vita, Broadway Market
Location, location, location. Plus delicious food and friendly service. Situated on 'The Fashion Catwalk' aka Broadway Market, Bella Vita is a cracking spot to get lost in a deep and meaningful chat while sampling Italian favourites. Pair a creamy, luscious burrata ball with a basket of pillowy bread, twirl al dente seafood spaghetti around your fork and dive into decadent layers of homemade tiramisu. On a nice day or evening, try to get a spot outside for maximum ambience and make the most of people watching during those in-between moments.
The 'something different' date
When you've been in a relationship for a long time and do everything together, there's not always heaps to talk about. So, to avoid being that couple in the restaurant sat in a tumbleweed of silence, here are some date ideas which are sure to spark conversation, and potentially romance too.
🎵 Sofar Sounds, Various
Gigs in living rooms and secret locations. You don't get to find out the line-up until the night which adds to the mystery. Rest assured, the quality is always decent and you might just find your new favourite artist.
🧘 Community Sauna Baths, Hackney Wick
Wood-fired saunas and ice-cold buckets to plunge yourself into after for a Wim Hoff style challenge. This won't be everyone's idea of a date, but we loved it. There is also a dedicated bar upstairs if you're looking to stretch the adventure out.
🍫 My Chocolate, Hoxton
Chocolate making workshops for lovers and friends alike. They also have cocktail making if you fancy branching out.
🎲 Draughts, Dalston
There's nothing boring about board games. Draughts in Dalston is home to hundreds of games with plenty of two-player options.
One Track Minds, Shoreditch
A cross between 'Desert Island Discs and TED Talks' Personal stories about songs and how they've affected a star-studded line-up of cultural thinkers and doers. Past guests include Sophie Heawood and Monica Heisey.
The 'it's over' date
We couldn’t wrap up this guide without mentioning 'My Ex' on Chatsworth Road. When it all goes Pete Tong, it's nice to know you can grab your coven and drown relationship sorrows over an aptly named 'fresh anger' or 'sour decision' cocktail.
